Food Facts: Chia Seeds: Why You Need Them In Your Diet

I’m a bit obsessed with chia seeds lately. They make the PERFECT addition to my morning smoothie as they bulk out and keep me full until lunch time (I’m not really one for breakfast so a smoothie is perfect).

Chia seeds are part of the mint family and originate from Mexico and Guatemala – and despite being so small they are absolutely packed full of amazing health benefits.

Benefits of adding Chia Seeds to your diet…

Get more fibre: 28g of chia seeds have 11 grams of dietary fibre (that’s around 1/3 of an adults daily intake) which is great for good digestive health.

Protein Power: A 28g serving will provide 10% of your daily protein needs.

Beat diabetes: According to Dr Mark Hyman, the majority of people who are teetering on the edge of diabetes have no idea. Chia seeds are being studied as a natural treatment for type 2 diabetes, because they have the ability to slow down digestion and prevent spikes in blood sugar.

Rid yourself of belly fat: As I mentioned above, chia seeds stabilise blood sugar and fight insulin resistance.  Which in turn can help decrease belly fat.

Strengthen your teeth and bones: One serving of chia seeds has 18% of your recommended calcium intake. Perfect if you’re trying to avoid dairy products. They also contain manganese and phosphorous which is essential for strong bones.

Boost brain power: There are nearly 5 grams of omega-3 fatty acids in just one serving.

Improve your mood: Chia seeds contain the amino acid, Tryptophan. This can help you feel happier and improve your sleep pattern.

Feel fuller for longer: Chia seeds expand so add them to a smoothie, almond milk or a yogurt and they’ll keep you feeling full. They can also help fight against food cravings and help control your appetite.

Detox: Chia seeds will cleanse the colon and drawn out harmful toxins in the body.
