As a freelancer I’m always looking for new places to work. I find myself at odds with working in coffee shops, I just can’t settle. My nosiness takes over and I end up flitting between facebook and listening to other people’s conversations.
Not good for a productive work day.
So here are 3 places where you can get your work done without over dosing on caffeine and inane chatter…
A public library…
On Friday I visited Birmingham’s new Library. WOW. With wifi, big open work spaces and a roof garden, it’s a shame that more libraries aren’t like it. But most libraries are pretty good workspaces. They’re quiet, calm, full of resources and woefully underused these days.
Some more images from Birmingham Library – amazing right?
Book a hotel room…
If you have a serious deadline then book yourself a room. It may seem indulgent but when you’re locked in a room, alone and without any of your home comforts then you’re bound to get some serious work done.
Co-working Space…
Thanks to places like IndyCube here in South Wales there are a plethora of Co-Working spaces popping up. It’s usually around £10 for the day with the added extra of as much tea and coffee as you can consume. They’re great if you love working around other people and love the vibe of an office whilst doing your own thing. Check out Good Co-working for places near you.

Thank you Rachael, I love this post. Simple, visual and some excellent ideas. I probably spend enough money in coffee shops to rent an office…well not quite. I quite like finding coffee shops and tea rooms with an inspiring atmosphere but there are other times when I just have to get my head down for a deadline and then a work space or hotel room or big library would be perfect. Go girl! We want more! More!
Hi Rachael,
Like Joanna, I love working in both coffee and tea shops. I love the library also; however, there is not one as gorgeous as the Birmingham Library that you mentioned. I used to frequent the Huntington Library in Pasadena, CA and USC’s library when I lived in southern California–very inspirational.
i love Birmingham library! tried twice to get in and there were huge queues both times!! xx
